One of the main reasons for flashover of high voltage insulators is the contamination deposited on the insulator surface

These particles are of natural origin or may be generated by pollution that often results from industrial, agricultural or construction activities. When the line insulators are contaminated, many insulator flashes occur during light fog unless the bending rings protect the insulators or special fog-type insulators are used

A transposition tower allows these sections to be connected together, while maintaining adequate clearance for the conductors.
